Delta Gamma

Beta Xi Chapter at Michigan State University

Chapter History

Michigan State College opened its doors for 2 new national sororities in 1945. Delta Gamma decided the time was right to begin a new chapter. 65 women were interviewed, and 18 were pledged on June 8, 1945. The pledging ceremony took place at the home of Mrs. Kittie Walker Knapp, Xi Alum. The first Beta Xi home was at 327 Hillcrest in East Lansing. They won the Gold Panhellenic Cup for first in scholarship that fall term. First Initiation ceremony was held on January 5, 1946 by National Officers at People’s Church in East Lansing. Our President’s pin belonged to a charter member of the Xi Chapter.

In the early 1970’s, several Fraternities and Sororities were forced to close because they could no longer fill their houses. In the Fall of 1973 after graduating 25 seniors, our chapter was left with 4 members. Executive Offices considered closing our chapter. With the hard work and faith of these 4 members, 2 Delta Gamma transfers, Fraternity Representatives, and Xi and Zeta collegians, the “Recolonization” effort was a huge success! This amazing and dedicated effort led to the lead article and cover photo called Beta Xi’s Miracle, in the Summer 1975 edition of the Anchora. Many members of Beta Xi and the chapter have received many awards. We proudly boast Cable, Oxford, and Shield Award Winners, as well as former national officers.

We are philanthropic focused, and have donated $58,854.34 to the Delta Gamma Foundation since 1994.

Today we have more than 210,000 members.
